Brownell Middle School - Opened in 1958
In July of 1927, at the age of 27, Dr. Samuel Miller Brownell began service as Grosse Pointe’s second Superintendent of Schools. After leaving the Grosse Pointe Public School System, Dr. Brownell became Professor of Educational Administration at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. In 1947, he began serving as President of New Haven State Teachers College (a position he held for seven years) while continuing to teach at Yale. Dr. Brownell resigned from the Presidency of NHSTC and took a leave of absence from Yale to serve as U.S. Commissioner of Education (1953-1956) in President Eisenhower’s administration.
